Jamie Bell - Bell Craves Hardman Status

British actor JAMIE BELL wants to be an action hero after working alongside JAMES BOND star DANIEL CRAIG.

The Billy Elliot histrion teamed up with Craig on forthcoming movie Defiance, and was impressed with his credential.

Bell says, "He runs and does all the head-ducking and diving. And I was like, 'That is the coolest thing I've ever seen'. I'd love to do that.

"It's a bit of a stretch out - Billy Elliot as action hero. But I think it can be done."

One of the near influential psyche singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern "deep soul" -- gruff, granulose vocals, flash arrangements, and an aroused way with both political party tunes and ache ballads. He was too the most coherent exponent of the Stax sound, carving his records at the Memphis label/studios that did much to update R&B into modern soul. His destruction at the long time of 26 was tragic non exactly because he seemed on the verge of break through to a spacious pop up audience (which he would so do with his posthumous number one single, "[Sittin' On] The Dock of the Bay"). It was besides unfortunate because, as "Dock of the Bay" demonstrated, he was besides at a point of artistic breakthrough in leontyne Price of the expression and sophistication of his songwriting and telling.

Although Redding at his peak was viewed as a consummate, versatile showman, he began his recording career in the early '60s as a Little Richard-styled roarer. The Georgian was working in the band of guitarist Johnny Jenkins at the time, and in 1962 he took advantage of an opportunity to record the lay "These Arms of Mine" at a Jenkins academic term. When it became an R&B hit, Redding's solo career was rightfully on its way, though the hits didn't real start to fly until 1965 and 1966, when "Mr. Pitiful," "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "I Can't Turn You Loose," a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction," and "Respectfulness" (later turned into a brobdingnagian pop crush by Aretha Franklin) were all big sellers.

Redding wrote much of his own material, sometimes with the help of Booker T. & the MG's guitar player Steve Cropper. Yet at the time, Redding's success was primarily captive to the soul marketplace; his singles charted just mildly on the pop listings. He was withal enormously respected by many stanford White groups, particularly the Rolling Stones, wHO covered Redding's "That's How Strong My Love Is" and "Annoyance in My Heart." (Redding besides returned the favor with "Satisfaction.")

One of Redding's biggest hits was a duet with boyfriend Stax star Carla Thomas, "Tramp," in 1967. That was the same year he began to express signs of qualification major inroads into the white hearing, particularly with a well-received performance at the Monterey Pop Festival (besides issued on record). Redding's biggest triumph, however, came just days in front his death, when he recorded the wistful "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," which delineate a significant leap as far as scrutiny of more intensely personal emotions. Also highlighted by crisp Cropper guitar leads and self-respectful horns, it rose to the upper side of the pop charts in early 1968.

Redding, even so, had perished in a plane crash in Wisconsin on December 10, 1967, in an stroke that besides took the lives of four-spot members from his backup band, the Bar-Kays. A few other singles became posthumous hits, and a good sum of early unreleased material was issued in the wake of his death. These releases weren't purely exploitive in nature, in fact containing some pretty interesting music, and little that could be considered embarrassing. What Redding power have achieved, or what directions he might have explored, ar among the innumerous tantalizing "what if" questions in john Rock & roll history. As it is, he did record a considerable wealth of music at Stax, which is now available on thoughtfully archived reissues.

JOHNNY FLYNN

A Larum (Lost Highway): B+

Twenty-five-year-old Irishman Flynns offbeat debut rings true. His muted nylon-string finger-picking and occasional blasts of trumpet get fleshed out with help from his ring, the Sussex Wit. Cellos weep, accordions wheeze, mandolins shimmer and banjos prance, leaving Flynn to say tales with his middle-English literary genius and earthy vocalizing. Rollicking anthems give way to somber songs that set off to drag. But when his short sister Lillie chimes in with harmony vocals that add a sweet feminine touch, A Larum works magic. Late arrivals to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal party, Merseyside, England's Mayhem (no relation back to the Norwegian black alloy affright squad) evolved from a small-time local punk stone band, circa 1985, and attempted to reinvent their raucous, Motörhead-inspired, errr...mayhem with a three-song EP entitled Bloodrush. Unfortunately, no one was buying the thinly veiled genre-hopping artifice beingness perpetrated by bandmembers Mick McGee (vocals), Chris Hand (guitar, vocals), Dead Cat (bass), and Collo (drums) -- all of whom were presently returned to namelessness and their punk roots when Mayhem split up.

Meet the Band: Fatal Flaw

The band: Joel Reader (voice, bass) is a recent transplant from San Francisco; Zack Wells (guitar, voice) and Josh Megyesy (guitar, slide guitar, voice) grew up on the North Shore; and Dave Bryson (drums) moved from Connecticut with his wife, a doctoral student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The sound: Boston cynicism meets California sunshine pop. Or as lead singer Reader puts it, it’s music with an “East Coast mentality and a West Coast disposition.”
“I didn’t realize until I sat down and read the lyrics just how cynical they are,” Reader said. “I have that California sunshine upbeat sound, but the message is sort of a downer.”

The back story: Thank you, Ashley Moody. The pixieish keyboardist of synthpop band the Information started dating Reader when they shared a Los Angeles-based record label. The couple tried the long-distance thing, but when Reader’s band broke up, he decided to switch coasts with a batch of ready-to- record songs. Moody introduced Reader to Information guitarist Wells, and the Fatal Flaw quickly came together. Earlier this year Wells recruited Megyesy and Bryson to complete the four-piece.
“I remember being really impressed with Zack,” Reader said. “He’s just one of those connected people that everyone likes. He’s also like a human recorder. He hears something once and he can play it back.”
The album: Reader calls the Fatal Flaw’s debut, which was finished this week at Barefoot Studios in Allston, a hybrid of his old and new musical lives.
“The process started last April is now locked and left for history to judge,” Reader said. “It feels kind of good to say. This particular batch of songs has taken two bands and two coasts.”
The special guests: The Flaw’s forthcoming album includes a veritable Who’s Who of the Boston alt-pop scene. Jared Marsh of Taxpayer, Luke O’Neil from the Good North, Heidi Lee from the SnowLeopards and Ashley Moody of the Information all contributed.
Boston vs. Cali: Reader grew up with punk bands like Green Day. He says Boston’s music scene is different than what he’s used to.
“Moving 3,000 miles from home really could have been disorienting,” Reader said, “but I’m really impressed with the level of talent in Boston’s music scene. They know how to play and how to make a record out here.”
Reader also has noticed that Boston is a stronghold for metal.
“We get a lot of that music bleeding through the wall at our practice space,” he said.
The music: Download two free, unreleased songs, “Don’t Start Believin’ ” and “When We Were Friends,” from the Fatal Flaw’s upcoming album, at bostonherald.com/entertainment.
